Reception Blog 2016-2017

Week beginning 06.03.17

This week we have been lucky to have two cycle instructors leading Bikeability Learn to Ride with all the children. They took part with enthusiasm, balancing and gliding along on the balance bikes. They played balancing games, weaving in and out of cones and lifting up their feet when going over the 'river' so the crocodiles and sharks didn't nibble their toes! Some children even progressed onto the pedal bikes and impressed the instructors by completing an obstacle course around the playground.

We celebrated pancake day today by listening to the story Mr. Wolf's Pancakes. Everyone had a turn measuring, mixing, whisking up ingredients...and of course tasting the delicious pancakes.

Pancake play has carried on this week with pancake role play in the home corner. Children have been making play-dough pancakes and seeing how high they can flip them with the frying pans!

21.02.17

We were lucky to have a very eggciting visitor today...a lady who brought us a 2 chickens to visit from her farm and left us with an incubator of eggs to look after until they hatch. The children did a fantastic job of listening quietly to learn about animals which hatch from eggs. Lots of children even held a bit of chicken food out and let the chicken peck it from their hand-very brave! We are being very careful of the eggs and counting down the days until they hatch. Three weeks seems like a long time to wait!

02.02.17

Lots of children having been playing teachers this week. Some have had a go helping to do the register too; saying good morning to all the children and making sure they are sitting nicely on the carpet! Some children even made their own very nicely decorated registers and went around the classroom ticking children off as they said good morning to them.

The children are getting fantastic at retelling the whole Hairy Maclary story using our story map as a prompt. Ask them at home to have a go telling the story. You can see the story map below which they might need to look at to help them remember what comes next.  We have also had lots of fun talking about all the different dogs in the story and acting it out together. There were some fantastic interpretations of the scary Scarface Claw...the toughest cat in town.

17.01.17

We have started looking at shapes this week, and the children have impressed me by remembering the names of lots of different shapes. We are working on remembering how many corners and sides each shape has. So far we have looked at circles, triangles, squares, rectangles and hexagons. It has been lovely to see all the shape pictures the children have done during Playing and Learning time, some children have made different superheroes and villains out of the shapes- super speedy circle and trickster triangle!
