Eco-warriors
We are the Eco-Warriors of Swinnow Primary School. Our mission to make our school as eco-friendly as possible and to help the plants and animals that live in our grounds to thrive.
As Spring approaches the Eco-Warriors built our bug hotels to give homes to the insects in our outside areas. We also scattered wild flower seeds to grow and bloom to support our pollinators.
The Eco-Warriors took part in the Big Schools Bird Watch and we counted as many birds as we could in a half an hour period. We saw crows, pigeons, great tits, blue tits and sparrows. We fed back our results in assembly so all the children know what we found. We even saw a rabbit in our environmental area.
The Eco-Warriors researched and made bird feeders for the birds in our environmental area. We used gellatine and seeds, set it in a cup, and then hung them on the trees. We checked the next week and the birds had eaten them all!
The Swinnow Eco-Warriors travelled to Pudsey Community Project to help sort out a big mixture of children's clothes for their Christmas clothes drive. We had a tour of the food bank and Pudsey Pantry and spoke about the different ways they support our community. We sorted loads of Christmas clothes ready for families to come and collect and we even got to take an item home for ourselves! Sarah and Richard spoke to us about sustainability and how to reduce, reuse and recycle and we came back to school with loads of ideas.
The Eco-Warriors began to sort out and clear one of our environmental spaces to make it nicer for the plants and animals. We thought about what plants we want to plant in Spring.
