Outreach

OUTREACH SERVICE TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE WEST OF LEEDS.

We understand that children learn best when they feel happy, safe and secure. There can be new and different pressures on children that can sometimes result in them feeling anxious, worried or unhappy during certain times in the school day:

  • They may have fallen out with a friend or feel that they are being left out or 'picked on'.
  • They may be finding it difficult to follow school rules for all sorts of reasons.
  • They may feel angry or upset due to changes at home.

All children can have these experiences at times and learning how to deal with them is important to their emotional well-being and mental health.

The outreach programmes of work available from the ABC Centre, are known informally as ‘Gateway’ sessions, working with groups of children from FS2 to YR6.

The ABC Centre works in strong partnership with the school during the outreach service to help ensure that the programmes of work meet individual needs, that any targets set are promoted at every opportunity throughout the school and any barriers to learning are addressed.

 The programmes offered are:

  • Nurture: FS2, KS1and lower KS2 (Yr’s 3 & 4)  – 2 sessions per week with a small group of children, consisting of target children and ‘role models'. The role models change on a weekly basis: minimum 10 weeks’ programme.

The nurture programmes are designed to meet the needs of children whose emotional and social development are below age expectations, who find it difficult to concentrate or stay on task for prolonged periods.

  •  KS1 and KS2 programmes  – 2 sessions per week with a small group of children, consisting of target children and ‘role models'. The role models change on a weekly basis: minimum 5 weeks’ programme.

These programmes are aimed at children who have the ability and development to work within a more structured programme and are displaying traits of ‘chosen’ behaviours.

  • KS1 & KS2 Bespoke programmes

The above programmes are personalised to meet the children’s individual needs. Planning for the programmes will take place after observations and meeting with the class teacher to identify areas of development.

All of the programmes include inset training to a member of the school staff, to continue personalised learning to groups of children.
