Today we talked about how cars and pedestrians need to be aware of each other and know how to act when they are using the same areas so that everyone can stay safe and get where they need to go. At this time of year we realised that it is especially important that cars can see us when we are near the road - dark coloured clothes make us almost invisible! WEAR SOMETHING BRIGHT AT NIGHT! We learned about what makes a safe place to cross the road and which places aren't safe. We checked that everyone understands how to use crossings safely, and we even learned a rap to help us remember.

In Class this week we will be designing and building bridges like the famous Victorian engineer - Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Why not have a go at building a bridge at home using any materials you can find? I wonder if you can make it strong enough to hold a toy, or if you can make bridges of different heights and lengths? Does changing the height, length or design make it stronger or weaker? You can look at bridge designs online for inspiration. I'd love to see your bridges on Class Dojo.

Victorian Industry 12.11.20
Today we tried our hand at some of the industrial activities that were common in Victorian Leeds. We tried weaving and printing. Making textiles and printing used to be done by hand, often in people's homes but eventually these activities were moved into factories where people operated machinery and produced products on a much larger scale. Our activities today were to help us to understand why the Victorians decided to mechanise weaving and printing. We will be discussing this tomorrow...

In science we are learning about different types of fabric and the properties they have whic make them suitable for their purpose. Have a fabric hunt around your home. Look for all the different things made of fabrics, such as clothes, towels, curtains, sofas, cushions etc. Think about whether the fabrics they are made of are thick or thin, strong or delicate, flexible, stretchy, warm, absorbent, waterproof etc. You could draw fabric objects and label the properties of the fabrics they are made of.

This week we will be learning about the famous Victorian engineer - Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Find out about him by watching these video clips.
You may wish to find out more independendently. In class we will be writing non-chronological reports about Isambard Kingdom Brunel. You could try this at home, or you could create a fact file or information page about this important man. Perhaps find out about one of his big projects - and present your information any way you like. You could draw and label some of his bridges, or maybe even try building a model bridge. Today we began our new history topic by investigating lots of historical artefacts and photographs from the Victorian period. We used these to suggest ideas about how the Victorians may have lived. They also prompted us to wonder about lots of other aspects of Victorian life - we have many, many questions to explore!
Then we pieced together a timeline of all the amazing things that happened during Queen Victoria's reign. We think she was a good queen who meant well for her people. We will find out more and make up our minds...

What a fantastic day we have had - tasting plantain, rice and beans, hot sauce, ginger cake, mango juice, coconut milk, pineapple and water crackers. We played instruments, wore our fancy head dresses and had a carnival parade. What a fantastic finale to our Black History Month Learning!

In class we are comparing the Caribbean with the UK. You could find out about Jamaican homes, foods, weather, beaches and animals. Then think about whether they are the same or differerent than those things here in the UK. You can present your research any way you like, as writing, a digram, picture, an information text, holiday brochure, leaflet or Powerpoint presentation.

Black History Month W/C 4.10.20
Our whole school is learning about Black History Month during October.
In Class 2 we are finding out about people who migrated from the Caribbean to the UK on the ship Empire Windrush in 1948. We learned about what life was like in the Caribbean and how people were encouraged by the British government to come to England and help rebuild following the destruction of World War 2. Although they had been invited, and left their homes with the expectation of a better life, many of the migrants experienced racism, prejudice, discrimination and also homesickness. In PSHE we talked about the dilemmas people might have about whether to move to a new country, and how they might have felt to experience racism when they had expected to be welcomed. As we move though Black HIstory Month we will explore the enquiry question, "How did arrivals on the Empire Windrush change Britain?" We will learn how many of the things we enjoy in Britain today were brought and shared by people arriving from other countries.

It was impossible to pick just one WAGOLL after our fabulous writing this week, so I picked two!
Invasion Games - Skills 1.10.20
In PE today we learned and practised skills that will help us play lots of different team games where dodging, attacking and defence are the key to success. Invasion games include football, hockey and netball. In our warm up game, cups and cones, we had to keep an close eye on what the other team were doing, move around the space carefully to avoid making contact with other players, and maintain speed. Our skill was to throw with accuracy, using both underarm and overhead techniques. We learned to look at our target, throw with the appropriate amount of force so that the ball reached it's destination, but didn't go too far and to throw efficiently, so that the ball reached it's target quickly - throwing a ball up very high can waste valuable seconds in a game!

Representing numbers to 100 W/C 21.9.20
This week we have been using lots of different concrete objects to represent numbers to 100. We realised that it is much easier to partition numbers into tens and ones when we are showing bigger numbers - it's easier to quickly recognise the number we built and much quicker to count!
Calligrams W/C 14.9.20
We have been exploring a type of poetry called 'Calligrams' this week in Class 2. A calligram is a shape poem - it doesn't have to rhyme - that is written in the shape of something relating to the subject that the poem is about.
Inspired by the book 'Here We Are- Notes for Living on Planet Earth' we spent some time thinking about the page explaining:
''People come in all shapes, sizes and colours. We may all look different, act different and sound different... but don't be fooled... we are all people."
We talked about what makes each of us special and unique, and some of the similarities and differences between us. Then we took our ideas and wrote a class calligram titled:
We are Class 2
Other pages of the book told the reader all about the wonderful things you can see on Planet Earth. We listened to Louis Armstrong singing 'What a wonderful world' and in groups shared ideas to contribute to another class calligram...

Welcome to 2020 - 2021
What a fantastic start Class 2 have made to the new school year!
I am so proud of how all our children have settled into our Class 2 Bubble - taking care of themselves and each other by following all our new procedures for hand washing, play times and lunch times and keeping keeping as Covid-safe as we can possibly be. Everyone has come back with an enthusiastic and positive attitude, ready and excited to learn, and what a lovely week we have had on our 'Mission to the Moon'.
Mission to the Moon - W/C 7th September 2020
Each house team is blasting off on the 384,400 km voyage to the moon. Children were awarded moon rocks, each worth 5000 km, for completing challenges and demonstrating good team work, good listening and great learning behaviours. By next Friday, we hope every house team's rocket has reached it's destination for a moon celebration!
We drew our own ideas of what the moon is, choosing whichever artists' materials we liked.
We wrote questions and 'I wonders' to identify things we want to know about the moon.
We have compared distances between places on Earth and the distance between Earth and the moon in our estimating challenge.
We learned moon facts, compared the moon with Earth and wrote statement sentences.
We designed, built, tested and evaluated rockets in our house teams.
We listened to space inspired music and tried to identify some off the instruments we could hear. We talked about how the music made us feel.
We did lots of active house team sports activities to earn moon rocks to help us on our journey to the moon.
We have worked independently, with partners and as a team.
Amethyst's amazing team work led them to be our first WAGOLL of the year at our first Zoom Celebration Assembly!

Important Information
Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays. This allows us to quarantine books for 72 hours before they are returned to the whole school collection. Please re-read books, and you can also access free e-books from our reading scheme at Oxford Owl.
Weekly spellings will be sent home on a paper slip on Mondays - you do not need to return these to school or bring in your practice - but do please learn these spelling patterns and the three 'red words' (from the Year 2 Common Exception word list) ready for our spelling challenge on Fridays.
PE will be street dance on Wednesdays and games on Thursdays. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit and trainers. Please have joggers or leggings and a jumper or jacket - children will be playing outdoors every day.

I've found a few fun activities you could try this week:
1.Ghost Writing - you will need a white wax crayon and coloured felt tips for this. Write each spelling in white crayon, then colour over the top with coloured felt tips and watch your word magically appear.
2. Vowels and consonants - write your spelling, circle the vowels (a,e,i,o,u) and underline the consonants. Vowels are worth 5 points each and consonants are worth 2 points each - find out the value of each word. Which word scores the most, least or the same as another? Alternatively, play against a partner - one of you choose vowels, the other chooses consonants, add your points up and see who scores the highest.
3. Wordsearch - you can make your own wordsearches on this website (I would keep your grid to a maximum of 8x8 letters unless you're up for a challenge!):

Geography – Maps!
In today’s geography lesson, we are going to put all the instructional writing skills we have practised in English and computing into action!
Building on yesterday’s algorithm task, we would like you to create your own map of an imaginary playground. Remember to create some symbols to represent the play equipment and don’t forget your key (the key explains what the symbols mean).
Then using a small Lego figure (or something similar), try to create some simple instructions to move it from one place on your map to another.
Say the number of steps forwards and the direction of turn (left or right) to move your Lego figure around your map. It might be a bit tricky, but try your best…

Whole School History
On Friday 8th May, the UK commemorates the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, Known as VE Day. This is the date that World War 2 ended in Europe. This week, leading up to that date would have been a whole school history focus week had we been together, learning at school.
So that we can still learn about this important time in British history, you can click on the picture above to access a pack of home learning ideas all focused on life during World War 2, and the celebrations of VE day. The pack can be used as a scheme of learning, where you work through the suggested activities in the order of pages, or you can dip in and choose to do anything you like the look of.
Guidance is given with each activity as to whether it is most appropriate for KS1, KS2 or whole school, including Early Years. We would love to see your VE day learning. You can upload onto ClassDojo, Tapestry, or send it to info@swinnowprimary.com with a note to forward it to Mrs Wyles and your class teacher. Statistics - Can you gather, organise and present data?
Task 1: Collect data (objects) from either inside your home or from your garden. First create a tally chart of at least 5 objects. Some data you could collect could be the number of:
- cars or people passing by your house,
- butterflies,
- light switches,
- cushions,
- DVDs
- toys
- teddies
- or think of your own...
Task 2: using the information in your tally chart, can you create a bar chart or pictogram?

EASTER NESTS
Ingredients
- 225g plain chocolate, broken into pieces
- 2 tbsp golden syrup
- 50g butter
- 75g cornflakes
- 36 mini chocolate eggs
Method
-
Line a 12-hole fairy cake tin with paper cases.

Melt the chocolate, golden syrup and butter in a bowl set over a saucepan of gently simmering water (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Stir the mixture until smooth. (Get an adult to help)

Remove the bowl from the heat and gently stir in the cornflakes until all of the cereal is coated in the chocolate.

Divide the mixture between the paper cases and press 3 chocolate eggs into the centre of each nest. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour, or until completely set.

PAPER HELICOPTERS
Fancy joining in with a STEM lesson? Watch the video below to make your own paper helicopters. All you will need is: paper, scissors, pen and a ruler if you have one (you can still do it without one). You can watch the video from the beginning and see the lovely work other people have done or you can skip the video to about 9 minutes in to get started on the experiment.
The Blue Umbrella
Click the picture below to watch a short clip about a Blue Umbrella. Once you have watched the clip, follow the lessons below (click on the lesson you need) to help you write a story. I know you'll probably want to zoom through all of the lessons in one go, but take your time and aim to complete one lesson a day.
Create a Toy Shop
Use toys that you already own to create a toy shop. The children can create their own price labels, shop signs and even their own play money to use in the shop. Encourage the children to add the amounts together and calculate change. Start with pence (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p) before moving onto pounds (£1, £2, £5, £10 and £20).
Chase the Rainbow
Why not join in with the Chase the rainbow trend. Create a rainbow picture (how you do it is up to you). Place the picture in a window for everyone to see and keep a look out for all the smiles your rainbow creates.

SPELLINGS:
Use your spelling list and try to build each word with LEGO. Some words will be easier than others. No LEGO?... you could use dried lentils, pebbles or even buttons?!
CREATE A TUCK SHOP:
Set up a tuck shop and give your children a certain amount of money to spend (maybe £1 a day). This could be real or pretend money. The children might even enjoy making their own money that can be used in the tuck shop.
Encourage your children to go to the tuck shop to choose their snack and count out the money needed. Once their money has gone...no more snack. A great way to learn about money and hopefully make your snacks last a little longer!
MATHS

BOOK WEEK! BOOK WEEK! BOOK WEEK! BOOK WEEK!
We have had a fantastic week in Class 2 this week! We started our new book 'The Farmer and the Clown' by Marla Frazee - a very special book without any words. First we took part in some drama activities with Mr Taylor and then put our ideas into words for the first paragraph.
On Thursday, we had great fun sharing our favourite books... Many of us dressed up as our favourite book characters, while others chose to keep cosy in our pyjamas. Lots of us also took part in the potato decorating competition too - and what a fantastic effort we all put into this! Well done everyone, I know the judges had a very difficult time trying to choose a winner!
We ended the week with our fabulous school trip to Leeds Central Library. After travelling there on the train, we thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the workshop with the children's author and illustrator, Bethan Woollvin. Class 2 were a credit to everyone - they behaved brilliantly!

Week beginning 24th February
Roll up! Roll up! The Circus has come to Class 2!
This week has been Leeds Week across school and Class 2 have had a very exciting time finding out what the circus was like over 100 years ago!
First we thought carefully about all the different kinds of entertainment we can enjoy in Leeds today - we had lots of ideas including watching our favourite films at the cinema, enoying pizza parties with our friends, ice skating in Millenium Square and watching Leeds United at Elland Road. Then we looked at the different kinds of entertainment there was in Leeds during the Victorian times, and we discovered how important the circus was to many people in those days.
Using vintage toys, we were able to discover lots about what the circus was like over 100 years ago. We had great fun making our own juggling balls and we even practised our circus skills with Mr Sensible when he brought his circus workshop to school!
Finally we researched the remarkable life of the circus owner Pablo Fanque and discovered what a talented equestrian he was! He was famous for teaching his horses how to waltz along to a live orchestra! He was also very generous - ask us what he did that helped many people of Leeds. We even found out that The Beatles wrote a song about him called Being For the Benefit of Mr Kite! What a fantastic week of historical learning we had!
Well done Zariah - you are Class 2 WAGOLL this week for being a curious historian! Zariah contributed lots of interesting ideas to our discussions about entertainment in Leeds this week and her work on what she enjoys doing with her family and friends is lovely! She put lots of thought and effort into it, and her presentation was super! Zariah also enjoyed juggling with her friends and she even gave her juggling balls a sunshiny name which made everyone smile! Zariah also drew a beautiful still life picture of a plant in art this week - she paid close attention to the detail and carefully shaded the petals and leaves. Well done Zariah!
Week beginning 10th February
Jessica is our fantastic WAGOLL this week for being a spectacular scientist! Jessica always shows lots of enthusiasm and curiosity when learning new things and she particularly enjoys taking part in investigations. In a recent activity, she thought very carefully about the effects exercise has on different parts of her body and she was able to clearly explain how it made her feel. Jessica also takes great pride in the presentation of her work and her science book is something she should be very proud of! Well done Jessica!

Exciting news... Show and Tell is changing in Year 2!
You will have all received a letter home today with a Show and Tell date on especially allocated to your child - please check book bags if you haven't seen it yet!
After half-term we will be doing Show and Tell on Thursdays and Fridays each week. Three children will be chosen to talk about an item they have brought in from home on one of those days. Their talk should last for a couple of minutes - then they will have the opportunity to answer some of the other children's questions.
We have chosen a different theme for each half-term - the first theme is:

You can help your child by talking to them about their item and encouraging them to think about:
- WHY they have chosen it
- WHAT information they want to tell the class
- WHERE it has come from
- WHEN they got it
- HOW it links to the current theme
- ...and anything else they think is important!
It would be great if your child could have a little practise at home before their Show and Tell day. They can even prepare a short presentation or draw pictures to share with the class if it helps.

Week beginning 27th January
Lydia is our fabulous WAGOLL this week! Lydia is a very talented young writer and she showcased her fantastic skills when writing about our robin's exciting migration adventures over the past two weeks. She used lots of story-telling techniques to produce a simply wonderful piece of writing - including expanded noun phrases, adventurous vocabulary choices, fronted adverbials and short sentences for impact! I'm sure you will be a famous author one day Lydia!
Week beginning 20th January
Jax is our amazing WAGOLL this week! Jax is making lovely progress in everything he does and we are all so very proud of him in Class 2! Jax is showing us his fantastic love of learning and he is so keen to finish all his work that he never wants to stop! Mrs Robertson says his learning attitude in her spelling group is brilliant - he is enthusiastic and stays on task - even helping others with their work while he is busy doing his own! What a superstar!
As scientists this week, we have been learning all about what living things need to do in order to be alive... we remembered this by using the acronym MRS GREN - all living things:

Excrete
Nutrition
We used this information to help us decide whether different objects are living, dead or never alive. The classroom was alive with the buzz of scientific debate! But the one object we really struggled to classify was the ball of wool... what do you think - dead or never alive?

Libbie is our lovely WAGOLL this week! Libbie has impressed everyone in class with her super attitude to learning - she listens carefully and tries her best in everything she does! She has shared some lovely ideas with her group in our reading activities and her handwriting improves every day! She has also been trying really hard with all her maths work too, which is fantastic! Keep it up Libbie!

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school after the busy Christmas term - they all seem excited and eager to begin the new year in Class 2!
This week we have started our new class book 'Coming Home' by Michael Morpurgo. We are very excited to find out more about the treacherous journey the plucky little robin makes as he migrates from Scandinavia.to England. Take a look at the following short film based on the book...
Arian is our fabulous WAGOLL this week! He has returned to school with a super learning attitude and he has really impressed us with his fantastic recount about his Christmas. He used rhetorical questions, exclamatory sentences, direct speech and wonderful vocabulary - WOW! Well done Arian - you clearly had a lovely time and you've got a great sense of humour!
Week Beginning 10th December
Jessica is our super WAGOLL this week for being an absolutely brilliant narrator in our school performance! She learnt her lines quickly and she says them clearly, accurately, and with lovely expression. Her timing is spot on - she delivers her lines at exactly the right moment and is able to read the situation,knowing when to pause if needed - she is a future actor in the making!
Week beginning 18th November
This week we have been learning how to write non-chronological reports about polar bears. We looked at how the reports were presented using headings and subheadings, and then we worked together to sort different sentences into the correct paragraphs. We could choose what order to put our subheadings in, however, we had to make sure that the information in each paragraph was in a logical order. Look at how well we worked together to organise the information in our non-chronological reports!
Week beginning Monday 11th November
Emelia is our super WAGOLL this week for her perseverance and determination when improving her handwriting! She has worked very hard at starting her letters in the correct place and making sure they are consistent in size while still trying to keep her words evenly spaced! Her poem of the Witches' Spell from Macbeth was beautifully presented - well done Emelia, keep it up!

This week's WAGOLL is Victor! He has been working so hard at improving his handwriting - he has now been awarded the Target Champion twice for just getting better and better! He is an absolute pleasure to have in class because he always works so hard. Well done Victor!
Week beginning Monday 30th October
Well done Ellis on being our superstar WAGOLL this week! Ellis is a great team-player - she has lots of super ideas and she always likes to share these with her talk partner, group or the whole class. She always supports her peers and ensures that everyone has their turn in group activities. She is also very kind, and can often be seen helping to tie shoe-laces, fasten coats and find misplaced items - she is especially good at keeping our tables tidy too - thank-you Ellis!

Our WAGOLL this week is a super historian! He has really enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London and has taken his learning beyond the classroom. He is full of fantastic facts which he has found out from playing 'The Great Fire of London Game'! Take a look at his super art work of a wattle and daub house from this time.

Uvejs is our super WAGOLL this week for always going over and above in everything he does! He is always the first one ready to learn, he is respectful towards others and his impeccable behaviour makes him a great role model! Well done Uvejs!
Week beginning Monday 9th September
Ruby is our first class WAGOLL of year 2! She has a lovely, positive attitude in class and this week she has worked particularly hard with her non-fiction writing on giraffes!She was focused throughout the whole lesson, reading the information and carefully selecting the facts she wanted to include in her fact-file. Well done Ruby - what a great start to the year!
