Another week has flown by in Oasis. Both sets of children in Coral and Atoll have tried hard with their learning and behaviour this week. On Fridays, as always, some of the achievements are celebrated. Have a look to see who earned star of the week for each class.

Coral star - Jaxon - For not letting a 'blip' in his behaviour spoil his week.

Atoll star - Shawn - For showing a super attitude towards his learning in Oasis and been a good influence on other children.

Oasis star - Shawn - For trying really hard with his behaviour and learning when transitioning back to his school. Keep up the amazing work!

This week the award has gone to Lucas. He has really pushed himself at break times and challenged himself to do laps of the playground. Super work Lucas!

Have a look at what we have done in Atoll this week:

 

 

In Engish, Atoll have been learning all about the Olympics - focusing more on the ancient times. By the end of the week, the children completed a non-chronological report using fronted adverbials! The class have done a wonderful job and really engaged in this.

 

 

This week in Maths, Atoll have been looking at co-ordinates. Atoll have been able to effectively plot different points on a grid - remembering the X, Y axis. Children have been coming to the front of the class, being confident with their skills and demonstrating them wonderfully. Well done guys!

 

 

This week in Science, Atoll have been looking at friction. They even had a go at an experiment using hands to move blocks of jelly from one bowl to another. They then trying again using oil on hands - they found that this reduces the friction!

 

 

Learning about the Olympics, Atoll's challenge was to create the 5 rings with objects around the classroom. They had to be careful about the colours they chose - blue, yellow, black, red and green! See the finished result below!

In Science have been lucky enough to be able to watch our own caterpillars develop.  Each week we have inspected the changing shape, size and colour of the caterpillars. We have recorded the approximate length and discuss how their texture and colour has changed. We are continuing to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly, and have research  weird and wonderful caterpillars from around the world.

    

 

 

In English and Topic we have been learning all about Leeds. On a map of the UK we can identify where England is, where Yorkshire is, and where Leeds in within West Yorkshire. We researched why the symbol of the Owl is linked to Leeds, and created our own 3-D owls using colours of our choice. We learnt facts about owls, such as where they live and what they eat. We all shared which type of owl were our favourites.

 

 

Some members of the class have been learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes. We have learnt about the properties of shapes, and found shapes in our own environment. We are beginning to recognise lines of symmetry using mirrors to check our answers. Other class members have been leaning about angles within a shape, and the properties and names of different triangles.

This term we have taken part in Yoga sessions. The Yoga sessions are story lead. They have shown great enthusiasm, imagination and listened really carefully. The class have copied the moves and have made great progress!

 

 

 

 

In English we have been discussing whether we think zoos are a good idea, because they look after animals that might become extinct, or whether they are a bad idea. Some of us thought they were a bad idea, and that animals should not be in captivity, and should be left to be wild animals. The class wrote down what they thought, and why they thought it, and we had a class discussion. The class was divided for and against Zoos.

 

 

In maths we came off our normal sessions to create our own zoos using coordinates. We had four areas of animal enclosures, a play area and somewhere for people to meet and eat.

In Atoll this week we have continued our learning about diary writing. After learning what diaries look like and what they should contain; the children planned their own writing. Making sure it was in chronological order, the children planned what their household pet was going to get up to during the day. 

After they had planned their writing, the children wrote some fantastic diary entries, with lots of the features that they had learnt in previous days.

 

 

In Maths this week we moved onto learning about decimal numbers. We looked how we can represent fractions as decimals.

We looked at how we write tenths and hundredths as decimal numbers, using a range of resources to help.

Through the week, the children worked hard and were able to confidently write a range of fractions as decimal numbers.

Have a look at some of the learning that we have been doing in Atoll this week.

 

 

In English this week we have been learning about writing diaries. We researched famous moments from the past where diaries have been written, including: The eruption of mount Vesuvius in AD79, the Great Fire and London in 1666 and Anne Frank's diary in 1942. We spoke about the purpose of a diary and looked at the style in which they are written.

We were learning all we could so that we could write fantastic diaries from the perspective of a household pet. 

We learnt all about relative clauses, and how they can add more detail to our sentences.

 

 

In Science this week we were leaning all about conductors and insulators. We learnt that a conductor allows electricity to pass through, whereas an insulator stops electricity passing through. 

In our lesson, we experimented with different materials to test whether they were conductors or insulators.

This week the award has gone to Lucas. He has shown a really positive attitude towards his break times this week. Due to the fact that he is not a fan of hot chocolate, Lucas had a different treat, and shared a musical moment with Mr Forbes.

 

This is what we have been doing in Coral this week:

 

 

We have been looking at the different characteristics of animals. Lucas found out why rhino's have horns and about their skin and teeth. He labelled his drawing and typed up information he had found. He also discovered that they are endangered, which sparked off conversation with the class about the animals they had been researching and if their animals were also endangered. 

   

 

 

On Fridays we focus on multiplication. Whilst the class were singing and playing games to help remember our times tables, some pupils were busy beating staff at times tables dominoes!

 

 

  

Miss Crowther invited Miss Orbell to teach the class dance during the Performing Arts lesson. Miss Orbell is an experienced dancer, and showed the class how to tap dance! They all had a go at wearing tap shoes, listening to the sound and rhythm of the shoes on the floor. They learnt specific moves, and also watched how important men are in dance, showing film clips from famous films.

In English, as part of our Animal Kingdom topic, we have been learning about endangered animals. First of all we researched some animals around the world that are endangered. We then chose one animal to focus on. Frankie chose the red panda and Kai chose the gorilla. 

After learning about the challenges that these animals encounter, we decided that we needed to do some persuasive writing. We looked at examples of persuasive writing, and the language that is used. We also had a go at writing a piece of persuasive writing as a group. 

Using everything we learnt, the children then wrote some fantastic pieces of persuasive writing.

 

 

In maths this week, we have been learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers. This was extremely tricky, but the children worked very hard and by the end of the week, were able to confidently solve a range of different mixed fraction problems.

In PSHE this week, we learnt all about Gender Stereotypes. The children were asked to draw a 'typical' boy and a 'typical' girl. We then spoke about how gender stereotypes are all around us, and have been from birth. We had some brilliant discussions around the pressure to conform to these stereotypes and the problems they can cause. We also watched a video, which you can see below:

 

 

Our topic this half term in Atoll is Electricity. In the first session, the children looked at electrical circuits and the symbols that are used. The children made electrical circuits, and then drew these in their science books.

Look at what we have been exploring in Coral this week-

 

 

   

 In English we have been looking at how people celebrate Chinese New Year. We were lucky enough to borrow a dragon head and Chinese costumes to try on. We looked at the different animals that represent each month of the year. We research our own animals, and wrote about the different characteristics of our animal. We also followed instructions and made a Chinese stir fry, which staff and children in OASIS were able to enjoy together.

 

 

In Maths we have been looking at measuring. We learnt to measure perimeter of a shape and revised column addition. On Fridays, we all revise multiplication in lots of different ways! We sang songs, played dominoes, played group games and completed individual challenges.

 

 

It is the start of another half term in OASIS and we have some super learning planned for the weeks ahead.

Take at look at what we have been doing in CORAL this week:-

 

 

We are coming to the end of our topic 'The Mighty Ocean.' We have used adjectives and expanded noun phrases to write about our pirate character that we created. We also found a real message in bottle! From this, we wrote a piece of creative writing, of what would happen next. We used a story hill to plan out our stories, and used similes and interesting starters to make our sentences interesting. We then made the desert island that the message in a bottle came from. 

 

Our pirates all had treasure chests, they followed maps to find their own treasure! We made our own treasure chests and treasure out of shoe boxes and found objects.

 

 

 

We are still investigating division and multiplication. Some of us are looking at sharing groups, and using counters to make sure we can see we have equal groups. We have set ourselves challenges to see if we can create a fact family and using inverse operations  to find the answer.

 

END OF AN ERA!

It was a sad end to the week in OASIS as Miss O'Connor moved onto new pastures. Having been at OASIS for over 10 years, the place will not be the same without her! All the staff and children will miss her greatly and wish her all the best for the future. 

For her last day, children and staff wore black and white as part of a panda theme! Have a look at some of the photos from the day.

Have a look at the exciting work Coral class have been up to this week

 

 

In English we have been learning about pirates! The class followed instructions to make their own pirate hats, designing their own skull and crossbones. We also leant about life aboard a pirate ship and we researched what pirates ate and drank. We wrote our own instructions using imperative verbs, on how to make Spice, a type of pirate drink.    

  

 

Some children have been working on improving their handwriting. The challenge was to keep our fingers on the table and write the 'Bossy' words in the paint, creating joined up writing.

 

 

 

 

In Maths we have been learning to share objects into even groups, division and multiplication. To help us recall our times tables, we played multiplication dominoes.

 

 

Following on from last week, in Atoll this week we have been using what we learnt about weird sea creatures and non-chronological reports to produce some excellent writing. The pupils worked well to learn how to use a range of fronted adverbials in their writing, before attempted to use some in their report. Have a look below to see if you can learn something interesting about a box jellyfish or an axolotl. 

 

 

This week in Atoll we learnt about microorganisms. We learnt that they are miniscule living things that we need a microscope to see. Even though they are alive, some of them aren't 'living' like animals. They can be things like dust mites, plankton, but also things like bacteria and mould.

The children were very knowledgeable, which is unsurprising with what is occurring in the world right now! We set up an experiment, involving bread, to see how environmental changes could impact the growth of mould. One of the children is testing the difference between bread in light, and in dark. Another child is testing damp bread and dry bread. We look forward to seeing the results.

 

 

In PSHE this half term we have been learning about mental health. In particular we have looked at the 5 Ways to Wellbeing. We have focussed on a different 'way to wellbeing' each week and this week was 'Give'. We had discussions about what giving meant, and how it can boost the mental health of all concerned. 

One of the children decided to make a cup of tea or coffee for all the staff in OASIS. This first meant taking the order, before carefully making and delivering the drinks to the very pleased members of staff. Have a look at the joy that giving to someone else can bring.

Another child decided to give spare plants to people, gift wrapped and with personalised messages inside. Mrs Naylor and Coral class loved their surprise gifts.

 

 

One of the fantastic opportunities that our pupils are offered is the chance to learn creative skills in 1:1 sessions. This half term, Mr Forbes is working with a pupil on some fantastic woodwork skills. Their task is to make a new musical instrument using a range of materials. We have been learning all about non-chronological reports this week. We looked at what non-chronological means and some of the features of what makes a good report.

We have researched weird sea creatures of the deep! We are going to use this information to write our own fascinating non-chronological reports. Look out for the reports, where i'm sure you will find out lots of new information.

 

 

In maths this week we have been learning about fractions. We have been converting improper fractions into mixed numbers. The children were very confident by the end and could explain how to convert 13/5 into 2 3/5. 

Next week we will be working on converting mixed numbers into improper fractions.

 

 

In Outdoor Adventure this week we have been looking out for our feathered friends. With the weather so cold, the birds have less to eat. Under Miss Crowther's guidance, the children used cardboard tubes, lard and bird seeds to create fantastic bird feeders. Have a look at the the final products below.

Extra extra read all about it!!

The learning that we did last week was finally put into action today (no thanks to the snow delay). The children in Atoll used the skills they learnt to write fantastic newspaper reports all about the Japanese tsunami that struck, causing devastation. SNOW!! 

What a strange end to the week we had! The children were able to have lots of fun in the snow at home. One of the more interesting photos that we were sent was of a fantastic snow volcano, erupting with a mixture of orange juice and chilli sauce. Have a look below.

We are currently learning all about tsunamis. We did a lot of research about how they are formed and also found out that in Japanese the word tsunami means 'harbour wave'. We watched a video of the destruction that they can cause (which you can see below). We are going to use some of this information to help write fantastic newspaper reports about the disastrous event.

 

 

 

In maths we have learnt how to multiply large numbers. The children learnt how to multiply 3-digit by 3-digit numbers! They learnt how to use the column method to successfully multiply these larger numbers together. The numbers were so large we even had to use our tables as super-size whiteboards. Welcome to a new year in OASIS!!

Unfortunately it has not been the start we all expected, but we are still continuing with some super learning in both Coral and Atoll class.

Our topic is the Mighty Ocean - we will be learning lots of interesting things about things that live in the oceans and seas around the world, as well as things like pirates, ships and mysteries of the deep!

As well as the learning that is taking place in the classroom, we will be providing remote learning for those children at home.

This will include:

• Home learning pack and resources.
• Regular phone calls and checks.
• Video clips used in class to support learning at home.
• Personalised instructional videos explaining learning that is happening at home.

Stars of the week

Due to the lower numbers currently in both Atoll and Coral, we have decided to have only 1 star of the week in each class. This award can still be achieved for maths and English learning, or any other impressive achievements through the week.

Coral Star

The Coral star this week was Harry. This was in recognition of showing a positive attitude when transitioning back to his year 4 class. Well done Harry!

Atoll star

This week's star in Atoll goes to Frankie. He had a fantastic end to the week and really showed a great attitude towards his learning.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time. Frankie has impressed Miss O'Connor with his ability to show kindness and compassion to other children. He has really tried to help others around him who are struggling. He is also joined by the two children who achieved the most break time buddy awards in the Autumn term.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time. Toby has impressed with his attitude at break times all week! He has was able to enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate, accompanied by whipped cream, sprinkles and marshmallows.

In English we have been researching toys. We looked at toy that are on sale now, and different toy adverts. We thought about all the different toys we looked at and created our own toy. We labelled our toys, explained how it worked through writing, and drew our toy. Some of us even had chance to create 3-D packaging. We all created our own advertising poster, using amazing adjectives to try and make people buy our toy. 

 

 

 It was all about sorting and reading data in our maths lessons this week. We took part in a Pet Tally challenge, we had to count how many different pets flashed up on the board and create our own tally chart. From this we made bar charts. We also have a go at reading and creating our own pictographs.

In English this week we have been learning all about Scottish food. We learned that traditional Scottish dishes include haggis, deep fried pizza, porridge and deep fried mars bar. When researching haggis, we found that it contains sheep's heart, liver and lungs, as well as oatmeal, suet, seasoning and spices. Then wrapped inside a sheep stomach. Have a look at the image below for an example.

 

The children used some fantastic language to make the food sound delicious.

 

 

This week in maths we have been learning all about perimeter and area. We learned that perimeter means measuring around the outside of a 2d shape and area means the space in the middle. 

The children confidently measured the area of simple and compound shapes, using great problem solving skills and working as a team.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time. This week, This week Harry has impressed with his ability to ignore the behaviour of others and focus on making correct choices himself. Harry was able to enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate, accompanied by whipped cream, sprinkles and marshmallows.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time. This week, This week Louie has impressed staff with his resilience and attitude and break times. As a reward he was able to have a delicious cup of hot chocolate with added goodies.

This is what we have been working on in Coral:

 

 

 We observed two minutes silence in Coral on Remembrance Day. We have been learning about why we mark this occasion, and why people wear poppies. We watched a film about the Christmas truce and discussed what life might have been like in the trenches and how the soldiers in the film might have felt. We used our imagination and expressed emotions by writing a letter home, as if we were soldiers in WW1. To help us, we wrote adjectives in an outline of a soldier, and created a battle field in the background.

 

 

We have been looking at perspective drawing. We learnt about vanishing points and that the nearer the object the bigger it is. We created a poppy field by using chalk pastels for the background and tissue paper to create poppies.

 

 

 

We have been learning about money in Coral, adding different coins to make one pound and how much change we might get from a pound. To help us, we revised number bonds to 10 and then to 100. Some pupils began to use decimal points to show pounds and pence.

 

This is what we have been working on in Atoll:

 

 

We have been learning about remembrance as part of our celebration topic this week. We looked at the poppies and their varying meanings. We found that there are red, purple, white and black poppies. We looked at the famous poem 'In Flanders Fields' and used it as inspiration to write our own poems. 

We then looked at what no man's land was like. We watched a few videos about what life was like. After we had a think about the ways we could describe our senses if we were running through no man's land.

In maths this week we have been learning about square and cube numbers. We used different equipment to show square numbers and also prove that numbers were cube numbers. We then used what we learnt to help solve a range of problems. 

 

 

As part of our light topic in science, we learned about how light is reflected off a surface. We used torches and mirrors to show that light travels in a straight line.

Welcome to the second half term of the school year. We have had a great first week back in OASIS in both Coral and Atoll class. In our celebration assembly at the end of the week, the children who have particularly impressed us received certificates as a reward for their super learning.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time. This week, This week Toby has impressed staff with his friendliness towards others and willingness to help. He was offered a cup of hot chocolate but instead chose to have a glass of milk and a biscuit.

We studied the Gunpowder Plot, and followed the story as new plotters were appointed in to the group for their difference expertise. Guy Fawkes had experience of working with gunpowder, and was assigned to organise the barrels filled with gunpowder and lighting the fuse once the barrels were in place, under the houses of parliament. We wrote lists of what Guy Fawkes would need. We also wrote a character profile on what he might have been like as a person. As a group, we made our own fire out of tissue paper for our display board.

We have been learning about France and learning French phrases. We also learnt to count in French, how to say how old we are, how to say hello and good bye. As part of learning about French food, we learnt about how French wine makers used to us their feet to crush grapes. We had a go at doing this ourselves! We tried different French foods and discussed what we liked.

We have been learning about the gunpowder plot in English this week. First of all we put the story in chronological order and watched a video all about the events. We then looked at the famous poem, analysed the language and then wrote our own version.

In maths this week we have been learning about multiples and factors.

One of the tasks we did as a warm up was to use numicon pieces to make 10 in creative ways. Have a look at the pictures below to see how they got on.

 

When learning about factors, we used a range of techniques. One of these was to use a factor tree to find out what numbers divided into each number.

We also used 'arrays' to show the various factor pairs.

We also used numicon to show that 6 wasn't a factor of 20. Have a look below and see if you can see why.

After we had done lots of learning about factors, we used what we had learnt to draw factor rainbows. This gave us a clever way to make sure we used all the factors for each number.

 

 

We finished off the week by exploring the great outdoors and having a fantastic time! We raked leaves into large piles and then jumped, rolled, slid, lay, crawled and charged right through them. Have a look at some of the pictures of the children having fun.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time. This week, Tyler has recently been allowed to take part in break times after getting permission from the dentist. He has made the most of this and had a really positive time. He earned a well-deserved cup of hot chocolate!

Panda Award - Harry

This is an award given by Miss O'Connor to celebrate one child who has impressed her across both classes. This week she chose Harry because of his positive attitude and the way he has ignored negative behaviour.

Maths

We have been learning all about statistics and data handling. First of all we learned about bar charts. The children gathered information from the rest of the staff and children and used the data to construct bar charts.

We then learned how line graphs can be used to show data that is changing. We looked at some examples of line graphs, before constructing our own. The line graph we constructed was to show how many balls we were able to throw into a bucket from an increasing distance. We recorded the results in tables and then drew accurate graphs.

Outdoor adventure

In outdoor adventure this week, we created a brand new sport! We used twigs and sticks to create football pitches. We then used ping pong balls and played a game of flick football. Some of the skills on show were fantastic!

English

The River Nile ran down the centre of our classroom this week. We learnt that the ancient Egyptians relied on the Nile for water, crop growth transporting and trading goods. We each had our own goods to trade, and bartered for a fair trade of goods. Pupils decided to take this further and created fishing rods to fish in the Nile.

We learnt about imperative or 'bossy' verbs this week. We learnt to follow and then write our own instructions using imperative verbs and clear instructions. We baked sausage rolls, but instead of using flat pastry, we created Egyptian Mummies by wrapping strips of pastry bandage around the sausage before baking. They were delicious!

We have continued our learning about instructions this week. We have been learning how to use imperative verbs and adverbs to make our instructions even better. After we had finished, we used our computing skills to make our instructions look even more professional. 

Maths

This week in Atoll we have done some fantastic learning. At the start of the week we learnt all about prime numbers. We learnt that prime numbers are numbers that have only two factors (1 and itself)

We then learnt all about square and cube numbers. We learnt that square numbers are the product of a number multiplied by itself, and cube numbers are the product of a number multiplied by itself twice. Have a look at the pictures below to see the super learning taking place.

This award is given for good behaviour at break time and this week Lucas has won the award. He has shown great enthusiasm and joined in well with others. Usually children are given the chance to have a cup of hot chocolate with a member of staff. Unfortunately, Lucas isn't a fan of hot chocolate so chose to have a packet of sweets instead. Well done Lucas.

This is an award given by Miss O'Connor to celebrate one child who has impressed her across both classes. This week she chose Kai because of the way he hasn't let a difficult start to the week spoil things. He has shown resilience to turn things around and have a great end to the week!

English

We have been learning how to write instructions this week. We looked at what a good set of instructions should contain. We then worked as a team to find a range of verbs and adverbs that we could use in our writing. After we had done all this, we used what we had learnt to write some super instructions to show how to make a pyramid out of sugar cubes.

Maths

We have been learning about division this week. We started the week by consolidating what we knew about dividing using a bus stop method. We then learnt a brand new technique, called double decker division, which helps us to divide by large 2-digit numbers. Have a look at the pictures below to see how we worked it out.

  

Science

In Science this week we learnt all about materials that are soluble or insoluble. We learnt that if a material is soluble, it means that it dissolves, whereas if it is insoluble, it means it does not dissolve. 

We tested a range of materials to see whether they were soluble. The materials we tested were: sugar, coffee, chalk, salt and sand. We found that sugar and coffee we soluble, whereas sand, salt and chalk were insoluble.

Toby has really improved his attitude towards learning this week!

This award is given for good behaviour at break time and this week Toby has impressed. He has been very helpful and considerate towards younger children. As a reward for this he was able to enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate (with whipped cream and sprinkles of course!). 

 

 

 

In English we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt. We researched lot of facts about the Egyptians and how they lived. We then looked at what a non-chronological report was, and the features that it had. Armed with all this information, we then wrote some super non-chronological reports to show off our super knowledge.

As part of our research, we learned all about Egyptian mummies. We learned about the process of how Egyptians made mummies in all its gory detail. We then experienced what it would be like to be a mummy, by wrapping ourselves in bandages.

 In maths this week we have been learning about rounding. We have learnt how to round to 10, 100, 1000 and even 10,000. At the start of the week we spent time looking at the place value of numbers up to 1 million. 

Louie was confident rounding to 10,000 and showed this by completing a rounding puzzle.

 

 

 

Our science topic this half term is materials. We have learnt about the different ways materials can be sorted, including looking at descriptions like: flexible, permeable, transparent, opaque, translucent. 

We then tested the materials to see whether they were electrical conductors or insulators. An insulator stops the electricity passing through, where as a conductor allows electricity to pass through.

 We tested a range of different materials in a circuit to see if the light bulb still lit up. 

 

 

 

 

 

In Art this week we have been learning about Andy Goldsworthy. He was famous for making artwork out of natural resources. Inspired by this, we gathered up a range of resources and used them to create our very own artwork. Have a look at the fantastic animals that we made using natural resources.
